{"id":2940,"date":"2025-01-28T13:51:42","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T12:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bombinatura.com\/?p=2940"},"modified":"2025-08-04T13:09:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T11:09:04","slug":"como-y-por-que-ocurre-la-metamorfosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bombinatura.com\/en\/2025\/01\/28\/como-y-por-que-ocurre-la-metamorfosis\/","title":{"rendered":"How and why does metamorphosis occur?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(15.747px, 0.984rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.737), 24px);\">Metamorphosis is a change, more or less abrupt, that transforms the form and structure of some animals after embryonic development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although this article focuses on insect metamorphosis, this process also occurs in marine invertebrates, fish and amphibians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin of metamorphosis in insects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evolutionary origin of metamorphosis is believed to lie in the <strong>related to the appearance of wings<\/strong> in insects, approximately <strong>400 million years.<\/strong> Some insects of primitive lineages, such as silverfish, are wingless and do not metamorphose. These insects, called <strong>ametoboles,<\/strong> grow in size and moult periodically throughout their lives, even when they are adults and able to reproduce. Moulting is the process by which an insect changes its exoskeleton in order to continue growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of metamorphosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the insects that do undergo metamorphosis, there are two main groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hemimetabolous <\/strong>or with <strong>incomplete metamorphosis:<\/strong> in these insects, the immature stages are called <strong>nymphs,<\/strong> and have a <strong>appearance similar to that of adults<\/strong>. The wings and genitalia of nymphs develop gradually, until they reach the adult stage with the last moult. The larvae grow progressively and also moult. To carry out metamorphosis, the larvae pass through the stage of <strong>pupa stage,<\/strong>during which the insect <strong>transforms its structures.<\/strong> In some cases, as in flies, most of their tissues are destroyed to form the adult structures. Once this stage is completed, the adult individual, with developed wings and genitalia, molts no more. Examples of holometabolous insects are butterflies, bees and beetles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulation of metamorphosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process of metamorphosis is regulated by two main hormones with opposing functions: the <strong>juvenile hormone, <\/strong>which maintains the insect in its current state of development, and the <strong>ecdysone,<\/strong> which induces moulting and metamorphosis. When the insect reaches a <strong>determined weight<\/strong>The hormonal balance shifts towards ecdysone, triggering metamorphosis. Although the number of immature stages and moults before reaching the adult form is usually fixed, factors such as poor nutrition, damage or disease can increase or decrease the number of moults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of metamorphosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the pupal stage, the insect will <strong>does not feed and remains immobile,<\/strong> vulnerable to a multitude of predators and parasites. In fact, when the pupa develops in exposed environments, as in the case of butterflies, it usually has a hardened and coloured surface layer that helps to camouflage it and protect it from other arthropods.
